How to Organize Your Traktor Collection: Playlists, Folders and Tags
Updated · by the MixGoat team · Tool: Smart Organize
Short answer
Organize inside Traktor first: right-click the Playlists node to create folders and playlists, use the Favorites bar for the sets you reach for every night, and treat Comment 2 and the star rating as your tag fields because Traktor has no tag system of its own. Keep the Track Collection as the only source of truth and use the Explorer node only to preview files before importing them. Do not rearrange folders on disk from Finder or Explorer, because collection.nml stores absolute paths and every moved file turns into a red exclamation mark until you run Relocate. If you want the disk to mirror the library, move files with a tool that shows the before and after tree, such as MixGoat Smart Organize (preview free, moving on the GOAT plan), then run Check Consistency → Relocate once.
Step by step
- 1
Build a folder tree under Playlists
Right-click the Playlists node in the browser tree → Create Folder, name it by the way you dig (genre, year, gig type), then right-click the folder → Create Playlist for each set list. Folders can nest, and dragging a playlist between folders keeps its contents. A track can sit in as many playlists as you like; the collection stores it once and playlists hold references.
- 2
Use smart playlists for anything rule-based
Traktor Pro 4 adds smart playlists: right-click the Playlists node → Create Smart Playlist and set the conditions, such as Genre contains Techno and Rating is at least 4 stars and Import Date within 30 days. The list refreshes itself from collection.nml as tags change, so "new this month" and "unrated" lists never go stale. For Pro 3, the closest thing is the search field combined with a saved playlist you refill by hand.
- 3
Put the lists you use every gig in Favorites
Drag a playlist or folder onto one of the Favorites slots above the browser (Preferences → Browser Details → "Show Playlist Favorites" if they are hidden). Favorites also work as drop targets: drag a track from a deck or the list onto a favorite to add it. Keep one favorite for a "to sort" inbox playlist so new imports never linger unsorted.
- 4
Turn Comment 2 and Rating into tags
Traktor has no tag field, so pick a convention: Rating for energy (1 to 5 stars), Comment 2 for mood or set position words such as opener, peak or closer, and Comment for anything else. Select several tracks, right-click → Edit, and type the value once to apply it to all. Right-click any column header to show Comment 2 and Rating, then sort or search on them; smart playlists can filter on both.
- 5
Keep Track Collection separate from Explorer
The Explorer node shows your drives and folders, including files not in the collection. Loading a file from Explorer adds it to Track Collection, and Import Music Folders (Preferences → File Management) imports whole folders. Set Music Folders to your real music root and leave "Import Music Folders at Startup" off unless you want everything in that folder in the collection automatically; a second import of a moved folder creates cue-less duplicates.
- 6
Mirror the library on disk with Smart Organize, then Relocate
In MixGoat open Smart Organize, choose "Organize into Folders", and set Main, Secondary and Tertiary Organization from Release Date, Genre and Label (with "Include Month in Folders" if you want year/month), or choose "Append to Filenames" to add tags like [Techno] [2024-03] to each name. The preview shows the full before and after tree without touching disk and is free; running the move is GOAT. Tracks with no genre or date go into a folder named Uncategorized. Then in Traktor right-click Track Collection → Check Consistency → Relocate and point it at the new root; renamed files will not be found by Relocate, so use Append to Filenames only on tracks you have not imported yet.
Why the browser tree beats folders on disk in Traktor
collection.nml keys every ENTRY to its absolute LOCATION, and each playlist NODE refers to tracks by that same path. Anything that changes the path, including a tidy-up in Finder, breaks the link and the track shows "Track not found" until Relocate repairs it. Playlists and smart playlists never touch paths, so you can reorganize them daily with no risk to cues, grids or the files.
Traktor also keeps its own view of folders: the Explorer node browses disk folders directly, and Music Folders under Preferences → File Management are watched import roots. A single music root with a stable structure and a rich playlist tree on top is the arrangement Traktor handles best. The generic folder-structure guide covers layouts that survive a move to another app.
What Smart Organize does and does not do for Traktor
Smart Organize moves or renames the audio files using the genre, release date and label MixGoat has for them (from the tags and from Mixpedia enrichment). It does not edit collection.nml, so the Traktor step is always Check Consistency → Relocate afterwards, which repairs moved files by name in one pass. It has no undo button in the app; the preview tree is what you review before committing, and copying collection.nml out first means you can always go back.
Because Relocate matches on file name, a rename is the one change it cannot repair. "Append to Filenames" is therefore best for a fresh downloads folder before the tracks reach Track Collection, while "Organize into Folders" is safe for the existing collection.
Ratings, comments and playlists when you switch apps
Traktor stores rating as a 0 to 255 value that other apps read as 0 to 5 stars, and Comment as the ID3 comment. When migrating to Rekordbox, Serato or VirtualDJ, MixGoat carries the rating, comment, playlist tree and folder nesting across; Comment 2 is Traktor-specific and is not a standard tag, so keep anything you cannot lose in Comment or in a playlist name.

Preview a folder structure for your Traktor musicFrequently asked questions
- Does Traktor Pro 4 have smart playlists?
- Yes, Traktor Pro 4 has rule-based smart playlists created from the Playlists node; Pro 3 does not. They filter on collection fields such as genre, rating, key, BPM and import date and update automatically.
- How do I tag tracks in Traktor?
- Traktor has no dedicated tag field. Use Comment 2 for keywords and Rating for energy; both are searchable, sortable columns and both can drive smart playlists.
- Why did my tracks show a red exclamation mark after I reorganized my folders?
- collection.nml stores absolute paths, so moving files in Finder or Explorer breaks every entry. Select the tracks, right-click → Relocate, and point Traktor at the new root folder; cues and playlists survive.
- What is the difference between Track Collection and Explorer?
- Track Collection is Traktor's database of imported tracks with their cues and analysis. Explorer is a live view of your drives; files there are not in the collection until you load or import them.
- Can I organize my Traktor music into folders automatically?
- Yes. MixGoat Smart Organize moves files into up to three levels of Release Date, Genre and Label folders after a free preview (moving is GOAT). Run Check Consistency → Relocate in Traktor afterwards.
- How many Favorites can Traktor show?
- The Favorites bar has a fixed row of slots above the browser list; drag playlists or folders onto them and enable the bar under Preferences → Browser Details if it is hidden. Check your version's manual for the exact count.
