Rekordbox vs Traktor Pro 4 (2026): Library, Cues, Hardware and Price
Updated · by the MixGoat team · Tool: Library Migration
Short answer
Choose Rekordbox if the club is your destination: it is the only app that writes the USB Device Library that CDJ and XDJ players read, with hot cues, memory cues, loops, grids and phrases intact and no laptop required. Choose Traktor Pro 4 if you play from a laptop on Kontrol S-series hardware or CDJs in HID mode and want Remix Decks, Stems, the Pattern Player, flexible beat grids and a perpetual licence you buy once. Traktor's eight hotcue slots are shared between cues and loops and its collection lives in one XML file, collection.nml; Rekordbox keeps eight hot cues plus memory cues in master.db. Moving between them is routine: Rekordbox can import a Traktor collection itself, Traktor imports collection.nml files, and MixGoat migrates either way free, converting Traktor's numeric key codes to a readable key and normalising ratings.
Step by step
- 1
Look at the hardware in the rooms you play
CDJs and XDJs from a USB stick mean Rekordbox, full stop: no other app can prepare that stick. If you carry a Kontrol S4 MK3, S2, S3 or a Z2 mixer with an X1, Traktor is the app they were built for. CDJs with a laptop in HID mode work in both, so a DJ who always brings a laptop can pick on features rather than on the booth.
- 2
Compare the cue models against how you prepare
Rekordbox gives you eight hot cues on pads plus memory cues you scroll through, and phrase analysis that labels sections. Traktor gives you eight hotcue slots per track that cues and loops share, plus cue types (fade in, fade out, load, grid) that are Traktor-only. If you set more than eight markers per track and rely on memory cues in the club, Rekordbox fits; if eight is plenty and you want loops on the same pads, Traktor is fine.
- 3
Decide whether Traktor's creative tools matter to you
Remix Decks hold sample grids you trigger as a fifth and sixth deck, Stems separate vocals, drums, bass and melody live, the Pattern Player adds a drum sequencer, and flexible beat grids in Pro 4 finally handle tracks with tempo drift. Rekordbox 7 has stems and Ableton Link and a large effects section but nothing like Remix Decks. Open-format and live-remix DJs lean Traktor here; DJs who mostly mix two records may never touch any of it.
- 4
Price the ecosystem for how you actually use it
Rekordbox is free for USB preparation and free in Performance mode with Pioneer DJ hardware, with Core, Creative and Professional subscriptions above that. Traktor Pro 4 is a one-time licence with paid upgrades between major versions and is often bundled with Kontrol hardware; there is no free tier beyond a demo. A USB-only Rekordbox user pays nothing; a subscriber can pay more over three years than a Traktor owner. Check current pricing on both sites.

Migrate a copy and play before you commit
Install the other app, run it once, then use MixGoat's Migrate Library to convert a copy of your collection (free). Going to Traktor, open it or use Preferences → File Management to import the written collection.nml; going to Rekordbox, enable rekordbox xml under Preferences → Advanced → Database and import the playlists. Play a set from the new app and check the tracks whose cues you know best before you delete anything.
Library and cue model: master.db versus collection.nml
Rekordbox 7 keeps its collection in master.db, an encrypted SQLite database in Library/Pioneer/rekordbox (macOS) or AppData/Roaming/Pioneer/rekordbox (Windows). Each track has up to eight hot cues on pads A to H and separate memory cues, plus loops, a beat grid and phrase markers (intro, verse, chorus, outro) drawn on the waveform. Playlists and intelligent playlists nest in folders, and Export mode copies everything a player needs onto a USB stick as the Device Library.
Traktor Pro 4 keeps everything in a single XML file, collection.nml, in Documents/Native Instruments/Traktor 4.x.x. Each track has eight hotcue slots that cue points and loops share, so a track with five hot cues has room for three saved loops. Traktor also stores cue types with no Rekordbox equivalent: grid markers that anchor the beat grid, fade in and fade out points for auto-mixing, and a load marker. Key is stored as a numeric code and displayed as musical or Open Key notation, which Traktor originated. Playlists and the folder tree live in the same file.
Hardware and where each app is used
Rekordbox is the club standard because CDJ-2000NXS2, CDJ-3000, XDJ-XZ and their relatives read its USB export natively and share it over Pro DJ Link. Touring house and techno DJs prepare in Rekordbox and travel with sticks. Performance mode also runs Pioneer DJ controllers such as the DDJ-FLX and DDJ-1000 and does DVS through DJM mixers.
Traktor is built around Native Instruments' Kontrol range: the S4 MK3 with its motorised haptic jog wheels, the S2 and S3, the Z2 mixer, and the X1 and F1 modules, plus the newer X1 MK3 and Z1 MK2. It drives CDJs in HID mode on CDJ-2000NXS2 and CDJ-3000, which gives a laptop DJ the club's players with waveforms on the player screens, and Traktor's DVS (Traktor Scratch) works with timecode vinyl through any supported interface. Its share of club booths is smaller than a decade ago but it remains common among four-deck and live-remix DJs.
Price and licensing as of 2026
Rekordbox uses subscription tiers: Free (Export mode plus Performance mode with Pioneer DJ hardware connected), then Core, Creative and Professional, which add DVS on any hardware, Cloud Library Sync and packs such as Video and Lyric. Many club DJs never leave the Free tier.
Traktor Pro 4 is a perpetual licence bought once, with discounted upgrades from Pro 3 and earlier and frequent bundles with Kontrol hardware. Native Instruments has also offered a Traktor Pro Plus subscription with extra features on top of the base licence, and the split between base and Plus has moved between releases. What transfers between Rekordbox and Traktor
Rekordbox can import a Traktor collection on its own (the library import from other DJ software under the File menu), and Traktor can import a collection.nml written by a converter under Preferences → File Management. MixGoat's Library Migration handles both directions free: it reads master.db by following Rekordbox's own database pointer or the newest Traktor collection.nml, and writes the other side after saving a .bak copy of the target.
What moves: playlists with folder nesting, hot cues with names and colours, loops, beat grids, key converted between Traktor's numeric code or Open Key and Rekordbox's Classic or Alphanumeric display, ratings normalised from both apps' 0 to 255 scales to 0 to 5 stars, track colour, comments, play count, and the text metadata (title, artist, album, genre, label, year, BPM, remixer). Traktor's grid, fade in, fade out and load markers are Traktor-internal and are not migrated as cues. Memory cues are Rekordbox-only, so going to Traktor they compete with hot cues and loops for the eight shared slots, and coming from Traktor you can choose hot or memory cues on the Rekordbox side. The general procedure, slot-count and notation gotchas are in mixgoat.com/guides/switch-dj-software-without-losing-cue-points, and the direction pages are mixgoat.com/migrate/rekordbox-to-traktor and mixgoat.com/migrate/traktor-to-rekordbox.

Move your collection between Rekordbox and Traktor with MixGoatFrequently asked questions
- Does Traktor work with CDJs?
- Yes. CDJ-2000NXS2 and CDJ-3000 connect to Traktor over USB in HID mode, with waveforms on the player screens, and older players work as MIDI or DVS timecode decks. You still need the laptop; only Rekordbox lets you play from the USB alone.
- Can Rekordbox import a Traktor collection?
- Yes, Rekordbox has a built-in import for Traktor libraries, and MixGoat does the same free with key conversion and ratings normalised. Traktor's grid, fade and load markers are not carried over as cues either way.
- Why does Traktor only have eight hot cues?
- Traktor's eight hotcue slots are shared between cue points and saved loops, so a track with six hot cues has two slots left for loops. Rekordbox has eight hot cue pads plus separate memory cues, which is why a Rekordbox track can arrive in Traktor with more markers than slots.
- Does Rekordbox have Remix Decks or a Pattern Player?
- No. Rekordbox has a sampler, sequencer, stems in version 7 and Ableton Link, but nothing equivalent to Traktor's Remix Decks or Pattern Player. If those are central to your sets, Traktor is the app.
- Is Traktor a one-time purchase?
- Traktor Pro 4 is sold as a perpetual licence with paid upgrades between major versions, and a Traktor Pro Plus subscription has been offered for extra features. Rekordbox is free for USB export and subscription-based above that. Check current pricing.
