Serato DJ Pro vs Traktor Pro 4 (2026): Library, Cues, Hardware, Price

Updated · by the MixGoat team · Tool: Library Migration

Short answer

Both are laptop apps, so this is a choice about hardware and feel rather than the club booth. Pick Serato DJ Pro if you play on Pioneer DJ, Rane, Numark, Roland or Denon DJ controllers and mixers, scratch on turntables with DVS, or want cues written into the audio files so any copy of a track carries them. Pick Traktor Pro 4 if you play on Kontrol S-series hardware or CDJs in HID mode and want Remix Decks, built-in Stems, the Pattern Player, flexible beat grids and a licence you buy once. Serato keeps eight hot cues and eight saved loops per track in crates; Traktor keeps eight hotcue slots shared by cues and loops in collection.nml. Neither imports the other's library, but MixGoat migrates in either direction free, with playlists, hot cues, loops, beat grids, key (Traktor's numeric codes converted), ratings normalised to 0 to 5, colours, comments and play counts.

Step by step

  1. 1

Let the hardware you own or want cast the first vote

A Kontrol S4 MK3, S2, S3, Z2 or X1 is built for Traktor and unlocks nothing in Serato. A DDJ-REV, DDJ-FLX in Serato mode, a DJM-S mixer, a Rane SEVENTY-TWO or ONE, or a Numark or Roland controller unlocks Serato DJ Pro and has no native Traktor mapping. Turntables with timecode work in both.

  2. 2

Check the cue and loop model against your preparation style

Serato gives every track eight hot cues and eight saved loops in separate banks and writes them into the file's tags. Traktor gives every track eight hotcue slots that cues and loops share, plus fade in, fade out, load and grid markers that only Traktor uses. If you regularly set eight cues and several loops on one track, Serato has the room; if eight total is enough, Traktor is fine and the extra marker types are useful for auto-mixing.

  3. 3

Compare the performance features you would actually use

Traktor: Remix Decks with sample grids, Stems in the base app, the Pattern Player drum sequencer, flexible beat grids for records with drifting tempo, and a deep effects section. Serato: Flip for recording cue sequences, Pitch 'n Time DJ for clean key shifting and key sync, Stems, and Serato Play for playing without hardware. Turntablists lean toward Serato's list; live-remix and four-deck DJs toward Traktor's.

  4. 4

Price the licence and the expansions honestly

Serato DJ Pro is unlocked free by Pro-ready hardware, otherwise a subscription or a one-time licence, with Lite free on entry-level gear; DVS, Flip, Pitch 'n Time and Video are separate expansion packs. Traktor Pro 4 is a perpetual licence with paid upgrades between major versions, often bundled with Kontrol hardware, with DVS included. Check current pricing on both sites and add the expansions you would need on the Serato side.

  5. 5

Migrate a copy and play a set before you switch

Install the other app, run it once so its library exists, then convert a copy of your collection with MixGoat's Migrate Library (free). Traktor users going to Serato just open Serato: the crates and the cue tags are there. Serato users going to Traktor open Traktor or import the written collection.nml under Preferences → File Management. Check the tracks whose cues you know best before you retire anything.

Library and cue model: file tags and crates versus collection.nml

Serato DJ Pro keeps its library in the _Serato_ folder inside Music: database V2 holds the track list and Subcrates/*.crate hold crates and subcrates, and the 4.x library adds master.sqlite under Application Support/Serato/Library. Hot cues, saved loops, beat grid and Flip data are also written into each audio file as Serato tags, so a lost database costs you crates but not cues. Each track has eight hot cues and eight saved loops in separate banks. Smart Crates filter by rules; there is no library import from other apps.

Traktor Pro 4 keeps everything in collection.nml, one XML file in Documents/Native Instruments/Traktor 4.x.x: tracks, analysis, cue points, playlists and the folder tree. Each track has eight hotcue slots shared between cue points and saved loops, and Traktor stores grid, fade in, fade out and load markers that other apps do not have. Key is stored as a numeric code and shown as Open Key (1m to 12m, 1d to 12d) or musical notation.

Hardware and where each app is used

Serato descends from Serato Scratch Live and its home turf is turntables and battle mixers, then controllers: Pioneer DJ's DDJ-REV and DDJ-FLX ranges and DJM-S5, S7 and S11 mixers, Rane SEVENTY, SEVENTY-TWO and ONE, and units from Numark, Roland, Reloop and Denon DJ. Club CDJs work through DVS timecode on a Serato-enabled mixer or HID on newer players. Hip-hop, open-format and scratch DJs, and most bar and controller DJs, are on Serato.

Traktor is tied to Native Instruments' Kontrol range: the S4 MK3 with haptic motorised jogs, S2, S3, the Z2 mixer, X1 and F1 modules, and the X1 MK3 and Z1 MK2 refreshes. It also drives CDJ-2000NXS2 and CDJ-3000 in HID mode with waveforms on the players, and Traktor Scratch DVS works with timecode through supported interfaces. Its users skew toward house, techno and live-remix DJs on four decks, and toward DJs who prefer a one-time licence.

Price and licensing as of 2026

Serato DJ Pro comes free with Pro-ready hardware, or is licensed by monthly and annual subscription or a perpetual licence for hardware that does not unlock it. Serato DJ Lite is free with supported entry-level controllers. DVS, Flip, Pitch 'n Time DJ and Video are paid expansion packs, sometimes bundled with a mixer.

Traktor Pro 4 is sold as a perpetual licence with discounted upgrades from earlier versions and is frequently included with Kontrol hardware. Native Instruments has also offered a Traktor Pro Plus subscription layer with extra features; which features sit in the base licence versus Plus has changed between releases. Check current pricing, and compare Serato's licence plus expansions against Traktor's licence plus any upgrade you would eventually buy.

What transfers between Serato and Traktor

Neither app reads the other's library: Serato has no import at all, and Traktor imports only collection.nml files. So the move is always through a converter. MixGoat's Library Migration reads the _Serato_ folder or master.sqlite, or the newest Traktor collection.nml, and writes the other side free. Going to Traktor it saves collection.nml to .bak first; going to Serato it writes crates and the cue tags Serato reads.

What moves: crates and subcrates as playlists with folders (and back), hot cues with names and colours, saved loops, beat grids, key converted between Serato's musical or Camelot display and Traktor's numeric or Open Key values, ratings normalised from Traktor's 0 to 255 scale to Serato's 0 to 5 stars, track colour, comments, play count, and the text metadata. Traktor's grid, fade in, fade out and load markers are Traktor-internal and are not migrated as cues. Slot counts are the main gotcha: a Serato track with eight hot cues and four saved loops has twelve markers heading into Traktor's eight shared slots, and the remainder do not fit. The full procedure, with the slot and rating notes, is at mixgoat.com/guides/switch-dj-software-without-losing-cue-points, and the direction pages are mixgoat.com/migrate/serato-to-traktor and mixgoat.com/migrate/traktor-to-serato.

Frequently asked questions

Can I move my Serato crates and cues to Traktor?
Yes, with a converter: MixGoat writes crates as Traktor playlists and hot cues, loops, grids, key and ratings into collection.nml, free. Watch the slot count: Traktor's eight hotcue slots are shared by cues and loops, so a track with eight cues plus loops will not fit them all.
Can Traktor cues be used in Serato?
Yes. MixGoat migrates hot cues and loops into Serato's crates and file tags. Traktor's grid, fade in, fade out and load markers stay behind because Serato has no equivalent, and the beat grid itself transfers as a grid, not as cues.
Does Traktor Pro 4 include DVS?
Yes, Traktor Scratch timecode support is part of Traktor Pro and works with supported audio interfaces and timecode vinyl or CDs. In Serato, DVS is a paid expansion unless your mixer bundles it.
Which is better for scratching, Serato or Traktor?
Serato, for most turntablists: its DVS lineage, battle-mixer integrations from Rane and Pioneer DJ, Flip and the pad feel are built around scratch DJs. Traktor Scratch is solid but the scene, tutorials and hardware ecosystem sit on the Serato side.
Does Serato have anything like Remix Decks?
Not really. Serato has a sampler, Flip and Stems, but Traktor's Remix Decks, with sample grids playing as decks C and D, and the Pattern Player have no Serato counterpart. DJs who build sets around live loops and one-shots lean Traktor.
